DELE and SIELE are the two official Spanish certifications recognised by the Instituto Cervantes. Both prove your level, but their format and purpose differ. Here is how to choose.
DELE at a glance
DELE is a diploma: you pick a level (A1 to C2) and either pass or fail. It is taken on paper at an exam centre, in set sessions several times a year. Its big advantage: it is valid for life.
SIELE at a glance
SIELE is a certificate: a single, fully computer-based exam that places you from A1 to C1 with a score. You can take it at an approved centre or remotely, and results arrive within three weeks at most. It is valid for five years.
| DELE | SIELE | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Paper, at an exam centre | 100% digital |
| Levels | One exam per level, A1 to C2 | One exam placing you from A1 to C1 |
| Result | Pass or fail | A score per paper |
| Validity | No expiry | 5 years |
| Dates | Set sessions | More flexibility |
Which exam for which goal?
For a Spanish citizenship application, only DELE is accepted (level A2 or above, together with the CCSE test). For university applications or a quick job application, SIELE is handy thanks to its short turnaround. To strengthen a CV in the long run, DELE has the edge because it never expires.
Teacher’s tip
Before you register, check your real level: aiming for a DELE level that is too high is the main reason candidates fail. The trial lesson is the perfect time to assess it.
How to prepare
Both exams assess reading, listening, writing and speaking. During preparation, your teacher trains you on the format of each paper, gives you time-management methods and focuses above all on speaking, where candidates lose the most points.
